This is devotional thought number 34 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“Can a man hold fire against his chest without burning his clothes? Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet? So it is with the one who has sex with his neighbor’s wife; no one who touches her will escape punishment.” (Proverbs 6:27–29, NET).

Please, please, don’t be “that” guy (or gal for that matter). Don’t be the person who thinks you can play with sexual sin and avoid the tangled web of tightly woven consequences. None of us can escape. It’s like thinking we can put our private areas into fire and not get burned. Think about it.

Solomon, the sexuality expert who had experienced his share of burning hot consequences is giving us some of the best counsel money can buy; except it’s free. Think of the number of persons in media, who could have saved millions of dollars in hush money, millions in attorney fees and lost court cases, thousands in medical fees, and years free from prison terms, if only they had listened to Solomon’s counsel. Think of the number of marriages that could have been preserved, children who could have retained peaceful lives, corporations that could have continued on their growth tracks if they had only listened to Solomon’s counsel. Think of the number of wars that could have been won, state secrets that could have been kept, endorsement deals that could have continued, and bullet and knife wounds that could have been averted if they had simply listened to Solomon’s counsel. Pay attention to this transition, now. Think of the number of persons that could have remained connected to eternal life, avoided long days and nights of guilty feelings, avoided hospital stays in mental health units from attempted suicides, and avoided the shame of broken ministries if only they would have listened to God’s counsel.

The truth is, while it is easy for us to read today’s text, and if we are not adulterers think this is a simple situation, we would do well to understand the depths of this issue. There are so many ways and reasons people fornicate and commit adultery. And by the way, despite popular views, Scripture lumps these two into one concept. The term from which we get, “pornography” is what Jesus used in Matthew 5:32 when He discussed divorce, fornication, and adultery in the marriage context. It covers the gamut of sexual impurity, immorality, and all forms of idolatry. I digress. We need not cite obvious examples of immorality like Samson, David, or the escapade between Lot and his sick minded daughters. Do you realize that not only lust drives sexual indiscretion? Here’s just one example. The hottest battles in the Middle-East will continue to rage because Abraham and Sarah got the not-so-bright idea, which was customary in their region, to add Hagar to their marital mix, in a feeble attempt to keep God’s promise for Him. Abraham’s descendants are at war till this day. Unfortunately, although God blessed Hagar’s son, his descendents continue to fulfil the angel’s prophecy in Genesis 16:11-12. This is no dis to Abraham, whom I consider to be my father too; it’s just the sad reality of a snapshot in time for even the father of the faithful. Adultery, in all of its forms, whether due to lust or to broker a deal, will bring with it woeful consequences.

I suppose the question for all of us to answer is, “Am I faithful to my God?” Unfaithfulness to God is spiritual adultery.

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (
