This is devotional thought number 35 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“My child, keep my words and treasure up my commands in your own keeping. Keep my commands so that you may live, and obey my instruction as your most prized possession. Bind them on your forearm; write them on the tablet of your heart.” (Proverbs 7:1–3, NET).

We have learned so much from the wisdom God gave Solomon thus far in our series about relationships, purity, chastity, repentance, finances, and other matters of life. Interspersed among the counsel are almost incessant reminders to focus on, keep, embrace, and listen to all that the Lord is instructing us to do, or avoid, as the case may be. As many great teachers have said, “Repetition deepens impression.” Thus, we have another look at Solomon’s admonition to treasure, follow, and keep the holy commands of God.

The more I read through the Proverbs, I am impressed by the tenderness of the wiseman. I am impressed by his willingness to show love and tender regard for his son. He makes constant reference to him, and as he employs endearing language, he unpacks priceless gems of truth. In today’s theme passage, he tenderly calls his child to keep and treasure up his commands as his own. This is special because oftentimes our children observe our customs from a distance and may even practice some of them because of their respect for us. However, until they sense a need to place value on whatever they are emulating, it will not take root in the soul. For example, a child or young person may recite prayers because mommy or daddy have modeled a healthy prayer life, but until that child begins to experience the God to whom she prays, she will only speak or recite prayers, and not actually pour out her heart to Him as to a dear friend. Nor will she experience the victories that such a connection brings. So our mere observation of mommy and daddy’s customs must move to the level of full intimate contact with the God of our parents, and then we will be able to experience the power and victory such an experience brings.

Solomon said that his child should keep and obey his instructions as a most prized possession. In the original language, this meant to set all of his instruction before our eyes like pupils. Did you get that? God would have us treasure wisdom so much, and focus on truth to the degree that they become part of us. Our pupils are part of our eyes, and thus cannot be separated from our focus. As we experience uninterruptible focus as we submit to God, we also must treasure up God’s command and wisdom until they become part of us. Therefore, our goal is no longer to simply comply with, observe, or look at God’s truth as an ideal, but rather to allow it to become a part of our constitution; that which makes us who we are in all aspects of our lives. This godly counsel is worth repeating.

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
