This is devotional thought number 36 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding a close relative, so that they may keep you from the adulterous woman, from the loose woman who flatters you with her words.” (Proverbs 7:4–5, NET).

When family life is not according to God’s ideal so much goes wrong in society and other areas of personal life. It is often said that the home is the hub of society. Society is a collective of all of the homes within its confines, and each of the local societies comprise world society. Can you imagine a world where family functions optimally, relationships matter, and those within each family unit who need professional help to heal past wounds would receive it? The murder rate, especially crimes of passion would decrease. One of the primary feeders of gang affiliation, broken homes, would cease to exist. Promiscuity would be eliminated. Serial violence would be extinguished, and more. This is a utopian dream; I admit it. However, the more persons who embrace God’s perspective of family life and societal law and order, will be the more who contribute to His ideal as we prepare for a new heaven and a new earth wherein dwells righteousness.

I would like to underscore the metaphor the wise man employed in our theme passage. He used familial relationship as a metaphor for the ideal of embracing wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and protection against the adulterous woman. We will not invest anymore time on the adulterous woman since we have made it clear that she is to be avoided sexually, spiritually, and prophetically. When one has close family bonds, odds are, those bonds create an environment of trust and learning. I can remember many things my sister and close relatives have shared over the years that have provided comfort, guidance, and peace at critical junctures in my experience. Solomon said if we are endeared to wisdom as we would be to a sister or close relative, that relationship would create a safe environment to combat all sorts of the world’s ills. Again, the key here is somehow learning the ideal of family bonding for the metaphor to make sense. When family dysfunction makes it difficult to embrace this ideal, God has provided us spiritual family bonds with all those who choose to do His will. All of God’s children comprise His family, and as such create a spiritual atmosphere of trust and safety.

Embrace wisdom like you would the counsel of a close relative, and be protected from poor life choices, bad relationships, and dangerous associations that destroy all who are not submitted to God.

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
