This is devotional thought number 46 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?” (Psalms 24:3).
God dwells in light unapproachable. If we were not restricted by time or space even in our humanness, and burst into the presence of God in all of His glory, we would immediately burst into flames. Perhaps this is overly descriptive, but we would certainly die. There is no human being that can stand in the direct presence of God and remain alive. He is holy and we are not. He is spirit and we are flesh. He is love and we are estranged from the womb. The contrast between God and us is astounding.
David asks the question, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?” (Psalms 24:3). He answered, “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.” (Psalms 24:4). Only the pure in heart can approach God. This reminds me of the story of Moses. At a critical point early on in His ministry, He needed affirmation from God. His mission was too heavy to bear. “Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.” (Exodus 33:13, 18). The Bible continues by saying that the Lord enfolded Moses into His presence, and there revealed His character through His name. He made His goodness pass before Moses while shielding him by His mercy. This is a clear example of one who ascended into the hill of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart.
Did you know that God is still cleansing people today? He still gives the blessing of forgiveness and cleansing. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9). When we receive the cleansing of God by faith, we have full access to the hill, or presence of God through Jesus Christ. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16). “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” (Hebrews 10:19-23).
After receiving the faith of God for cleansing and forgiveness, we are granted access to His presence. David concluded his statement by sharing what the benefit of it all would be. “He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” (Psalms 24:5). Thank the Lord for giving us the privilege of being clean.
