This is devotional thought number 48 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.” (Habakkuk 2:19, 20).
It is important to remember in the times of deepest trials, that the Lord is in control. This is a lesson that Habakkuk learned well. He wanted to know how long the Lord would put up with the wiles of wicked people. He wondered how long the Lord would allow them to appear to prosper while God’s people languished. “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.” (Habakkuk 2:2-4). The Lord proceeded to tell his son of the woes of the wicked. He made it clear that their evil would not go unpunished. They could consult their idols and command that they speak all they wanted to, but to no avail. Stones and wood cannot instruct anyone. There is no life in them.
The Lord distinguished Himself to Habakkuk and anyone else, in the future, that would know the vision. The Lord, not idols, is in control. The Lord, not impotent statues of beasts and other creatures, is worthy of worship. The Lord, not the enemy, will triumph in the end. Anytime you are tempted to think that the Lord will allow wickedness to continue unchecked, remember the counsel He gave to Habakkuk. Anytime you think to resort to some inferior medium to receive light in place of God, remember the two edged counsel given. “But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.” (Habakkuk 2:20).
