This is devotional thought number 51 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“With his speech the godless person destroys his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous will be delivered.” (Proverbs 11:9, NET).

When I read and understand our theme text, I immediately think of Daniel, the prophet. After serving God with all his heart, and more than one earthly king, it seems godless men had had enough. They could not deal with the fact that he was favored by God and powerful men, so they devised a scheme to destroy him. They could not tarnish his reputation, because he was faultless before God. He stayed connected to Him and whatever sins he committed, he readily confessed and forsook them. These evil men realized that the only way they could get to him was to use his dedication against him. They schemed and tricked the king into making a law that would force all people to worship him, and since they knew Daniel only worshipped the King of the universe, they thought they held him fast in their snare. The law stated that those who worshipped anyone besides the king would be thrown into a den of hungry lions.

To make a long story short, Daniel continued to worship the only True and Living God. The king was forced to have him thrown to the lions, although he regretted succumbing to the trickery of his counselors, but God delivered Daniel out of their snare. His intimate knowledge of the Lord positioned him to escape the devil's snare. The Lord’s angel stopped the lion’s mouths, and much to the king’s relief, Daniel came up out of the lions’ den unscathed.

This story is an illustration of our theme text. The words of trickery from hypocritical men were targeting the man of God for destruction; however, Daniel’s knowledge of his Creator positioned him to be delivered just in the nick of time. In the same way God stopped the lions’ mouths for Daniel, He will stop the devil, the roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, from making sure of his prey. “Take note of the one who has integrity! Observe the godly! For the one who promotes peace has a future. Sinful rebels are totally destroyed; evil men have no future. But the Lord delivers the godly; he protects them in times of trouble. The Lord helps them and rescues them; he rescues them from evil men and delivers them, for they seek his protection.” (Psalm 37:37–40, NET).

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
