What if you were guilty of a capital offence and were awaiting trial? Notice I said you were guilty. This means you actually committed the crime. In your mind, there’s no need to examine evidence for some loophole in the law, because you understand that you deserve execution following sentencing. Would you feel confident standing before the judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, jury, witnesses, and all of the onlookers awaiting the outcome of your trial?

Let me tell you that according to Scripture, we are all guilty of sin whose penalty is eternal death. This is horrible news! Who wants to be punished and lose eternal life? I know I don’t. The Bible also teaches that every person who has ever lived will face judgment. There is no way around it. Heavenly judgment occurs in three stages, ultimately culminating in God rewarding us according to our works (Revelation 22:10-12). This can be a foreboding thought considering the fact we are all guilty of sin.
What if, in our trial example above, the judge and defense attorney were the same person? What if there were a way for that judge/advocate to deliver you from the penalty of your capital crime through expungement of your record, and the method was that he would be punished for your crime? Are you tired of the what ifs?

The fact is that in the Old Testament Jewish economy, which was modeled after God’s handling of sin, penalty, forgiveness, and cleansing, demonstrates God’s love in a most mysterious and miraculous way. You see, we are all guilty of sin. True. We all are deserving of eternal death. True. But, God loved us so much that He gave us His Son Jesus as our judge, advocate, and innocent substitute, that if we have saving faith in Him, we would become innocent in the heavenly courts/judgment (John 3:16; John 5:22; 1 John 2:1-2; Zechariah 3:1-6). This is great news! As if that weren’t good enough, if we accept God’s plan of salvation by faith all need to fear the judgment is removed through perfect love (1 John 4:16-19). Our God who is Perfect Love, then empowers us through His Holy Spirit to live above all of the sins that put us in danger of eternal death in the first place. All of this and more is made possible through the cleansing phase of Christ’s High Priestly ministry, which began in 1844, and will culminate not long before His Second Coming.
Now you have a decision to make: Will you accept God’s gift of love and receive freedom from sin or reject it, and receive the eternal consequences of your sins? The choice is yours.

Attempting to encapsulate the beauty of God’s love as displayed in Christ’s ministry in the heavenly sanctuary in so few words is impossible. We covered this subject in 10 days worth of deep online devotional thoughts between October 3 & 14, 2015.
