This is devotional thought number 58 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”

“For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.” (Psalm 69:9)

The temple of the Lord is His dwelling place. Anywhere the Lord dwells is holy. If we are to be His dwelling place, it is reasonable for Him to expect us to be holy.

In the Old Testament, the Lord told Moses to have His people build a sanctuary so He could dwell among them. When Moses was summoned into the mount to commune with God, He gave him the blueprints for the sanctuary, which was to be built after the pattern of the heavenly sanctuary. Can you imagine how it must have affected the Lord when, on so many occasions, the sanctuary and its services were taken lightly? Can you imagine how it was for Him when Eli’s sons offered strange fire on the altar, or when King Uzziah took it upon himself to offer incense though he was not a priest? These acts were unacceptable and the Lord dealt with them swiftly.

Jesus shared the zeal of the Father concerning His sanctuary. “And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” (Matthew 21:13). When He discovered the leaders of the people in the holy temple taking advantage of the poor and downtrodden, it inspired holy indignation within Him, and He chased them from the temple. The defilement of the temple was reprehensible to Him. It was never intended for common use.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (I Corinthians 6:19, 20). It is with the same zeal that God thinks of His people. We are to be His dwelling place. We are not our own. The Lord Jesus gave His life and risked eternity for us, yet sometimes we defile our soul temples. “Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” Matthew 15:17-19. It is because of these character flaws that Jesus died. When we accept the sacrifice of Jesus in our behalf, the process of cleansing us from sin begins. As we walk with Him daily, we become more like Him. The difference between our soul temples and the temple in Jerusalem is that Jesus will not come in to us uninvited. He will not throw over the tables of the moneychangers and chase them away without our consent. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).

Day after day, the Lord wants to cleanse us in every way. It is a blessing when we open the door of our hearts by His grace, and let Him in. When Jesus lives within us, the temple is complete. We are created to commune with God and He is pleased when we let Him in.

Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
