This is devotional thought number 59 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.” (Psalms 73:25).
This text is powerful. I suppose it goes without saying; after all, it is the word of God, but this one is particularly powerful because it gives priority to Him. There is no one, anywhere, in heaven or on earth that satisfies like God.
For thousands of years, the Lord has made a career, so to speak, of satisfying needy souls. He is more filling than the best food. He quenches the dry soul more than any spring or well of water. He gives more rest than the most comfortable bed. He is more loving than the most compassionate spouse. He is more understanding than the greatest mother. He is more of a blessing than one thousand greeting cards. He is God and I need Him. I need Him.
We all need to praise Him more. He has done great things. If we were to praise Him every hour of the day, He would still be worthy of more praise. If we had two thousand tongues, each telling a different story of His goodness, it would not be enough. Angels bow before Him. Devils tremble at the sound of His name. When He is in the room, diseases cannot continue to afflict people. It is no wonder that David said he did not desire any on the earth more than he desired God. When you have the best person in the universe as your friend, who can replace Him?
If we give the Lord more praise each day, the gloom of life’s darkest midnights would completely pass away. There would only be light as He permeates our being. We are blessed in that, God is willing to make friends with us through the ministry of Jesus Christ. What would we do without Him? We need Him. He is our everything.
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
