This is devotional thought number 61 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalms 116:8, 9).
David, the apple of God’s eye, had a way of seeking after Him with his entire heart (Psalm 17:8). Oftentimes, the circumstances that inspired David’s zeal had to do with his enemies viciously assailing him. Even his mind was full of trouble, and sometimes betrayed him, as an enemy would.
David’s passion causes me to marvel often. How could a man who saw so much suffering and death because of his own disobedience, focus his eyes on the Lord? I know many people seek the Lord when they encounter strait places, but often when the trouble passes, their pursuit of God ceases. This was not the case with David. It seems that he did not let a day pass without humbling himself before the Lord, and like Mary Magdalene pour himself out at Jesus’ feet.
Did David understand something important that we all need to grasp? There must have been a reason for his unwavering pursuit of God. Certainly, the overwhelming motivator was his appreciation and love for God. Time after time, the Lord delivered him in spite of his errors. I believe that David understood that his enemies would ultimately be powerless before him when he was humble before God. The best position to be in while living on this wicked planet is at the feet of Jesus. The most glorified position to assume is humility before Him. If we live in constant connection with God, we become an impenetrable fortress against the fiery darts of Satan. We become partakers in the victories that Jesus won while living on earth. The devil aimed his most destructive temptations at Jesus, and He came forth from the midst of them a conquering King. The victory of Jesus becomes ours when we put implicit trust in Him. This, my friends, is what David understood. This is what stimulated his appetite for godly things. Let us follow the example of David, and walk humbly before the Lord.
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
