“And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.” (Genesis 28:10-12).

The Lord was slowly revealing Himself to Jacob. He knew that as He continued to lead Jacob, he would soon become the faithful man that God intended him to be. After Jacob was blessed by his father and sent on his way, he traveled toward Haran. As the sun set, he found a place to sleep for the night. The Lord gave him a dream of a ladder reaching into heaven. He saw a vision of angels ascending and descending upon it, with the Lord at the top. The Lord proclaimed His name and promised Jacob that He would make of him a great nation and would give him the land where he slept as an inheritance. This was the hope Jacob had. God said, “And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” (Genesis 28:15-17).

Did you know that Jesus expounded on this dream in the New Testament? “Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” (John 1:49-51). Jesus is our connection with heaven. With His humanity, Jesus lays hold on us; with His divinity, He lays hold upon God. In truth, He is our mediator. There is no other way that we can have access to the throne of God. As with Jacob, He promises that those who are faithful will inherit the place whereon we stand.

One thousand years following the return of Christ, we will inherit the earth made new (Revelation 20, 21). The New Jerusalem will descend to the earth and we will see the prophecies of Isaiah 65 fulfilled. All of this will be possible, not because of any good that we have done, but because of the Ladder, Jesus Christ. Through Christ is communicated the power that we need in order for us to submit to God and be renewed by His Spirit.

We are blessed to have such a good friend in Jesus. Thank the Lord for being willing to give us all of heaven in one gift, the person of Christ.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
