This is devotional thought number 64 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God? Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.” (Joel 2:15-18).
Israel’s interaction with God has always been particularly fascinating to me. It speaks to the mercy of God and His extreme patience. It seems as though they lived on a pendulum. Back and forth, they swung between repentance and iniquity. Left and right, they swung between confession and transgression. It shows that the Lord is determined to save people. Many times they deserved to be utterly wiped out, but the Lord extended His mercy. It is true that sometimes in mercy there is chastisement.
Such was the case in the days of Joel, the prophet. He was given a solemn message of warning for God’s people. After having gone into detail, He gave them the formula to turn the tide. He gave them the formula for having favor with God through humility. He said that the people should gather the children, elders, and congregation together for a solemn assembly. They were to diligently seek the Lord for mercy, while recommitting themselves to Him. The priests were to intercede for the people between the porch and the altar, entreating the Lord not to bring reproach upon His children by allowing the heathen to rule over them. The Lord told the children of Israel that He would restore the crops and all that had been taken away due to their iniquity. He promised the early and latter rains would come to refresh the land.
The Lord is still answering the sincere prayers of diligent seekers today. He delights to know that sinners have chosen to forsake their wickedness in order to follow Him. As we seek His presence through revival, reformation, prayer, and Bible study, He will refresh us with the early and latter rains of His Spirit. He will saturate us with His power that the world may see our good experience with Him and glorify Him. Let us come together whenever necessary to seek the Lord’s face, that we may please Him and bring honor to His matchless name.
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
