This is devotional thought number 65 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7).
The Lord spoke in almost deafening tones to the children of Israel, whom He delivered from Egypt. As usual, they committed iniquity to the point that it aroused the Lord to address them with unmistakable language. He used example after example of things that should have gotten their attention. “Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?” (Amos 3:4-6). The message of warning should have been clearly understood. When the Lord spoke, He wanted their undivided attention. If He spoke through the prophets, His people needed to get an important message.
The Lord said to His people, in essence, that He does not do anything important without informing His people through the gift of prophecy. Such is the case even today. Countless numbers of people are groping around in darkness, searching for a sign, or word from the Lord. He has given us the best gift for guidance second only to the Holy Ghost in the Bible. When we diligently search its pages, we are able to walk through the messages of prophets. We are able to see by the power of His Spirit, truths that transform. In the last days, it is especially important to know that He speaks through prophecy. The books of Daniel and Revelation are full of the Lord speaking important things concerning the times in which we live. It would be well if we studied them side by side, searching through the truths depicted there. The symbols and allegories are unlocked by comparing them with one another. The truth now present comes to more and more light as we labor over the prophecies. I thank God for giving us a key to unlocking what is important to Him. Prophecy is that key. “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7).
