This is devotional thought number 62 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“All of a person’s ways seem right in his own opinion, but the Lord evaluates the motives.” (Proverbs 21:2, NET).

My friend and brother often says that in marital conflict, there’s his truth, her truth, and “the truth.” The truth stands in contrast to the others because the others are based upon human opinions and feelings. They cannot transcend human thought because we don’t know any more than what our five senses detect; and even then we cannot rightly interpret what we think we are sensing. It is not morally wrong to believe our own thoughts per se. It becomes problematic when we compare ourselves to other frail human beings and somehow become proud based upon what we perceive. The wiseman said that God sees and knows all. He examines our motives. He has all of the data. He can give the right assessment of all things. And not only this, He is the holy measuring rod to discern how righteous or unrighteous our motives are. Paul said it this way: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NET).

All I have said is true, not only in marital conflicts. It’s true in all areas of life, and all types of human relations. In business, government, media, family, friendships, religion, academia, healthcare, etc., our own opinions are good as far as they go, but if we hope to be successful, and wish our success to transcend this wicked world, all we think and feel must be submitted to God and measured by His infallible Scriptures. Thus, it is imperative that we invest quality time everyday in prayer, Bible study, and submission to God.

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
