This is devotional thought number 65 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”
“If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small.” (Proverbs 24:10, NLT).
I am no mind reader, but I think it’s safe to say that many of you got lost in your feelings after reading our theme text, because you remember the many times you have failed under pressure. Welcome to the club. All have sinned and come short of God’s ideal for us. And if it’s any consolation (it should be), Jesus came to save those who come up short. He came to redeem failures. He came to help the helpless. If you are in any or all of these categories, you are in prime position for God’s greatest attention. Truth is, I am not trying to minimize the human condition or make you comfortable with spiritual failure. I am simply underscoring the fact that we all need Jesus to give us clean hearts an to fill us with His Holy Spirit.
How can we receive the kind of faith that does not fail under pressure? I already gave you a hint. One way is that we ask God to give us new hearts. I know that sounds obvious, and yet so few of us really understand what that means, so let me help you here. Our old mindsets are bent toward unholiness, faithlessness, and sin. When God gives us new hearts, He does so through faith. How do we get saving faith? The Bible says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). King David said it this way: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:9–11). Jesus said it this way, while praying to His Father: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:17). Do you see the pattern here? Here’s one more: “Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.” (Psalm 119:165, ESV).
Fail proof faith comes to those who keep God’s words are the center of every thought and action. When we allow the Holy Spirit to write God’s Word into our lifestyles, we cannot fail. We have great peace and assurance even when the crucible gets hotter and the pressure is on. Take courage from the beleaguered prophet Jeremiah’s testimony as you face your trials with God by your side: “Then I said, “Lord, you know what’s happening to me. Please step in and help me. Punish my persecutors! Please give me time; don’t let me die young. It’s for your sake that I am suffering. When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.” (Jeremiah 15:15–16, NET).
A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
