This is devotional thought number 70, and final in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.” (Psalms 63:1, 2).
Until we long for the Lord just as an animal lost in the desert would long for water, we will not receive the blessing of living water. Until His presence is so vital to us that we would stop at nothing just to hear a word from Him, we will always hunger and thirst. Nothing else will satisfy. Until we have experienced the power and presence of God in our lives, we are not capable of beginning to understand how vitally important a relationship with God is.
In the Psalms, David often uses the imagery of water to describe various facets of a relationship with God. Here are two examples: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalms 1:1-3). “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalms 42:1, 2). Since our bodies are made up of a high percentage of water, the relationship between our need for God and our need for water is apparent.
I long for the day when I will desire the Lord consistently, as a parched traveler who had nothing to drink for three days. I realize that the Lord supplies even our desire to have a closer relationship with Him. I trust that He will give that blessing to me because He never withholds good gifts from His children.
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name. Our next series of devotional thoughts is titled, “The Faith I Live By.”—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
