This is devotional thought number 1 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” (Galatians 3:13).

If you are cursed, how do you get blessed? How can this awful plight be turned around so life can start looking up for you?

There’s a lot of strange and diabolical information out there about curses and blessings. From the occult, to folklore, to poisoned pulpits, there is no shortage of outlets spewing lies that cause people to become paranoid and fearful, or even coughing up thousands of dollars to get themselves into the blessings category before it’s too late. The truth is, since blessings and curses have never been about superstition or old wives tales, the key to their reality cannot be found there. Our heavenly Father has given a basic guideline relating to these concepts. To His people Moses said, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Being blessed or cursed is about decisions. Do we choose to listen to God and allow Him to transform us, or do we ignore Him and take life for granted? That’s the question. If the former, we have chosen life. If the latter, we have chosen death. In your spare time, please read Deuteronomy 28 for a fuller understanding of how this works.

In our theme text, Paul lays this principle out clearly. Those who are guilty of breaking the Ten Commandments Law without repenting are cursed (i.e. condemned to eternal separation from God, which is the second death). This is not good, to say the least, especially considering the fact that God created us for His glory. He created us to reflect His image and live forever. Unrepentance makes this impossible. However! God employed a plan that changes the game completely. Jesus, as the Perfect Representative of heaven and earth, in His humanity, became cursed for those who choose faith in Him. Jesus, who never sinned, took on all of our sins and bore the penalty for sinning, so we could avoid this plight by faith in His gift! He became our Substitute! Are you getting this? Jesus died and rose again so we can die to self and sin, and live forever. We need only to surrender all to Him, and allow Him to transform our characters to a reflection of His.

So, if you want to be delivered from the curse of eternal condemnation, and ushered into the realm of massive, eternal blessings, you need simply to choose. Choose life! Choose submission to God’s will. Choose holiness regardless of what is happening in the world around you.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
