This is devotional thought number 3 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4).
[Fill in your name here], where are you! Hello? Where are you? Imagine God coming down from His lofty throne to look for you. Imagine the incredible love and condescension that makes this possible. Imagine your overwhelming sin debt that makes this necessary. If God does not come looking for you (and me), we will be lost forever.
There is so much unnecessary confusion about the first steps in our salvation. Do we suddenly one day have a brilliant idea that we need to give up our Godless lives, and then we renounce all sinful pleasures along our path to salvation? As emotional and mystical as that may sound, nothing could be further from the truth. If God waited for us to have an aha moment and then give ourselves to Him, He’d be waiting a long time, and we would miss out on eternity in the process.
You may recall the story of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The perfect couple, for two different reasons, both disobeyed God. They yielded to their own desires above God’s will for them. God did not take this lightly. Nor did God allow them to flounder in their new state of rebellion. Having already given mercy to preserve their lives long enough for them to repent, He put the repentance plan into gear. He went to the Garden of Eden and said four critical words that changed everything: “Adam, where are you?” He was not inquiring because He could not find Adam. No. He wanted Adam to face the reality of His sin. He wanted Adam to sense His need, and God would supply the power he needed, to get on the right track. If God had not advanced toward Adam, the representative of the (now fallen) human race, he would have died as one still hiding his shame in the bushes of life, and shivering in the cold of self-righteousness.
As our theme text intimates, and our brief look at Adam and Eve illustrates, God must make the first and vital step in our salvation. He is the one who, through the Holy Spirit, and the merits of Jesus Christ, draws us to an understanding of our sin state, and His power to deliver us. He gives godly sorrow for sin and the power to live holy lives, as a gift. He gives us the little measure of faith we need, so we can lay hold of the gift of God.
Where are you? Hopefully, you are exercising God’s blessing of faith, to lay hold on His gift of salvation, and looking forward to eternity with Him. If not, today is your day. Now is the time. Do not delay.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
