This is devotional thought number 1 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“For I have a great sense of obligation to people in both the civilized world and the rest of the world, to the educated and uneducated alike. So I am eager to come to you in Rome, too, to preach the Good News. For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” (Romans 1:14–18, NLT).

If the apostle Paul were still alive, I would attend one of his open air meetings and tell Him how proud I am of him. Paul was an interesting character. I suppose we all are, in some ways. But Paul was interesting to me because he could tick all the boxes in the Jewish culture of his day, of what it meant to be a “good” spiritual leader. He was “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.” (Philippians 3:5–6). Yet, when he finally encountered Christ, and submitted to Him, he said, “...what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,” (Philippians 3:7–8). It was this Paul, who was so zealous for the cause that he missed the God of the cause, that also persecuted God’s people, and separated himself from those “Gentiles” whom leaders like he would have considered unclean, who finally found it pleasurable to carry the message to those whom he once persecuted, and others he once deemed unclean. His was a miraculous story of God’s power to transform hopeless sinners into holy saints. I am proud to know of brother Paul’s legacy, and to be a recipient of some of the wisdom he imparted, in the Spirit a couple thousand years ago.

I am also enamored by Paul’s confession. He said that the power of God unto salvation, the gospel of Jesus Christ was for everybody - all comers! Jesus said that His house, the fellowship of all believers, was to be a house of prayer for all people! What an incredible blessing! In an age of exclusive country clubs, secret societies, A-List events, and gated communities, it is refreshing to know that there’s Someone who accepts me. That special Someone is God. All of heaven rejoiced when I repented. All of heaven rejoiced when you gave your life to Him. All of heaven will rejoice, if you are still on the fence about surrender, and you finally see the light and repent.

Our God is able to save 100% of persons who act upon the little measure of faith God gives everyone, and allow it to grow and facilitate our connection with Him. God is able to save 100% of people who surrender all of the good, the bad, and the ugly that we are in our own strength, in exchange for His love, holiness, and empowerment to live like Jesus lived. I respect brother Paul, because he did not continue to allow his pedigree and knowledge to continue to separate him from his God. He finally surrendered his will to God and became one of the most prolific followers of Christ the world had ever seen. I...
