This is devotional thought number 11 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (1 John 2:1).
The One we wounded is our Advocate? What? The One we bruised, and is fully righteous is ready, willing, and available to give us His power so we can be saved.
God does not play with sin, let me tell you! It is no light matter. When people sin, people die; or at least that is the penalty for sin. Sin is disagreement with God, which is indicated by the transgression of the Law. Although God is merciful enough to delay the sin penalty, giving us enough time to see the error of our ways through the Spirit’s guidance, the penalty must come, at some point. Sin’s ultimate outcome is eternal death.
Suppose, now, you recognize this and surrender your life to Jesus for safekeeping? Suppose you finally begin to enjoy the blessing of victory over sins that used to plague your life, but in a moment of temporary self-reliance you make a mistake? Will this sin error separate you from God? Will He cast you away because of it? Let me reiterate that God does not trifle with sin. However, those who surrendered themselves to Him may occasionally slip and fall. This is no cause to despair, unless it becomes a lifestyle and that person refuses to repent. You see, God understands the sin problem. He knows we are subject to err. He also knows that the Spirit provides godly sorrow for sin. He gives us the ability to turn our backs on it if we falter. Like a loving Father, God is ready to receive us into His arms so we can get back on track.
God’s will is that we yield ourselves once and for all to His holy will, but if we trip and fall, Jesus is prepared to mediate our case, and restore us to right standing with Him. At some point, all who are surrendered to God will live above sin as we await the coming of Christ. He is indeed able to keep us from falling. He is able to do so in this present, evil age. If you ever make a sin mistake, immediately throw yourself on God’s mercy and allow Him to restore you into the image of His dear Son; your Advocate and lover of your soul.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
