This is devotional thought number 13 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“From Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have been granted a faith just as precious as ours. May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire.” (2 Peter 1:1–4, NET).
You cannot lose. Let me repeat: you cannot lose (that is, if you continue to grow in your intimate knowledge of God). Jesus said it this way, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3). Do you believe me now? Losers do not have eternal life.
Winners have everlasting peace that is beyond human understanding. Trials will come. Temptations will come. Difficulties will come. But, those who become the embodiment of Peter’s exhortation in our theme passage, will receive everything necessary for life and godliness. That is a promise. As in life, in general, so it is in spiritual life - success breeds success. That is to say that every time we experience the power of God to overcome a trial, we receive increased courage to succeed again, trusting that our God does not fail; and therefore, we will not either. Peter gives a compounding list of how this success breeds success. Here it is: “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. But concerning the one who lacks such things—he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins.” (2 Peter 1:5–9).
If we can keep the reality of God's power to help us overcome past sins and difficulties ever before us, we will remain on the right track. As we grow in the knowledge of God, and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, we cannot lose. This intimate knowledge is eternal life; receive it.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
