“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:3–4).
Since God has given us every advantage to live godly lives, what hinders us from living in holiness? I am not asking this of everyone, because there are now stalwarts who have received the gift of holiness by faith like, Enoch, Elisha, Abigail, Deborah, Job, Joseph, and others did. Were they spiritual superheros? I am asking those of us who look at their examples with suspicion; as though it is impossible to please God fully.
Perhaps the key to receiving this power, besides divesting ourselves of self is embracing His exceeding great and precious promises. Here are a few: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5). “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19–20). Here’s another one: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22). One more: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10).
If we are to be recipients of godly advantage, we must seek out and receive God’s promises in His Word, by faith. By doing so, we will become partakers of the divine nature. We will overcome the corruption of this world. We will shine as lights in a dark place. As long as we continually place our trust in Him, we will reflect His perfect image to the world.
Here’s one last verse of encouragement: “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” (Jude 24–25).—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
