This is devotional thought number 14 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.” (Daniel 6:5).
What do you do when powerful people, literally, hate you to death (when anyone hates you, for that matter)? Do you allow that fact to distract you? Do you keep the faith? It’s a real question we each need to consider. The world is full of hatred these days.
I find great encouragement in the story of Daniel. For many years, he faithfully served different rulers. They promoted him because he was humble before God. The power of God compelled the rulers to have the utmost respect and trust for Daniel, although they may not have understood that it was God’s power.
During the reign of Darius, the presidents and princes in his courts did not like Daniel. His model character probably fueled their hatred. Oftentimes when you live righteously, unrepentant people develop disdain for you. Because of their evil deeds, they cannot stand the light of God that shines through, because it exposes them. This was the case with Daniel.
No matter how Daniel’s enemies wanted to trip him up, they could not, because he was hidden in God. His character was exemplary. They realized that they would never have a reason to accuse him before the law, so they became creative. They decided to use his obedience to God as a stumbling block. I certainly wish that the only way someone could cause trouble for me would be to catch me living righteously. Though they were evil, they took note that he was a stickler for pleasing God.
There is much more to the story, but the point for today is that the Lord wants to empower all of His children to be faithful as was Daniel. The only accusation that He wants to be brought against us is that we pleased God, as well. Why not choose, today, to allow God unrestricted access to your life, and be faithful like brother Daniel?
