“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:7–9).

What seeds are you sowing today? Whatever seed you sow, of that seed the fruits will come.

Sowing and reaping can be a very rewarding process. I am no farmer (or even a great gardener, for that matter); however, I have had the privilege of learning a few things some years ago when our family transitioned to rural living. I can remember wanting to push back a line of trees behind our house that were about 100 feet away. I felt crowded. I know that sounds strange considering the distance I just gave, but we lived on a few acres of land and it made no sense to me to have the tree border so close. Some friends of mine came armed with a chainsaw and cut down 30 sumac trees for me. When I got some money, I rented a backhoe, dug out the enormous roots, and graded the new field we had created. What to do? Well, much to my wife’s amazement, I bought two giant sacks of grass seeds and cast the seeds all over the place in that area. Well, it was more like I was a child throwing dust in the air, getting them everywhere. You will never guess what happened (unless you are paying keen attention). That area was soon covered with wonderful, luxuriant grass! I then proceeded to plant a crabapple tree, peach tree, pear tree, eucalyptus tree, and cherry tree. I felt so accomplished. Me, the little city boy, grew up, and planted something. Most of what I planted prospered! What if someone came in and sowed weeds or some other less than desireable crop in my new field? What would have been the fruit? The answer is obvious.

Even though most have no idea how to sow and reap, we do understand how insane it would be to sow grape seeds and expect a pine tree; or to sow watermelon seeds and expect to grow strawberries. Why? There’s this little principle in nature at work here—what you sow (and cultivate) will create a like kind harvest. It’s not genius. It’s a basic law of nature.

Why, then, do so many of us sow corrupt spiritual seeds expecting a holy harvest? Why do so many of us sow seeds of lying, doubts, sexual sins, prayerlessness, and pride thinking we will reap a rich spiritual reward, and are disappointed when it does not happen? There are strict, predictable laws of nature. Likewise, the law of God manifests a predictable outcome for those who choose to submit to or reject its principles.

Fortunately for us, the principle goes both ways. If we sow submission to God, obedience, repentance, love, and confession, we will reap a bountiful harvest, in the Spirit!

Even a non-farmer can figure out which of the two options is best. Sow seeds of righteousness unto life everlasting as the Lord gives you strength. One day soon, you will reap the fullness of the harvest—eternity with God. Choose life and help someone else to do the same.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
