This is devotional thought number 16 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17).

What is in your headphones? Are you hearing voices in your head? If so, who’s speaking?

No, I am not asking you if you’re listening to the latest hit record, or whether you are struggling with any particular mental illness. I am asking, however, if you have the makings of great faith. The Bible says that faith, that vital element that grasps the power of God and connects Him to our souls, comes from hearing His Word. If the Scriptures are His Word, are you listening to His voice? Are you giving keen attention to what He has to say?

Have you ever heard of the term, “Shema”? It is the Hebrew way of describing the following passage: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” (Deuteronomy 6:4–5). It is the moral equivalent of actively listening for God’s voice, for the express purpose of doing what He says. It is no mere sensing of the vibration of sound waves and discerning of what sort a message is. It is an imperative given to God’s people that He is unified with the Son and the Holy Spirit, and that we must love Him with everything we have, and everything we are. Shema is a verb. It is action. It is to discern and do God’s will. Shema.

There are so many voices in this world, telling us to do all sorts of foolish, dishonest, and hateful things. Sometimes the media, thought leaders, and even some irresponsible government officials say things that have long lasting, negative impact. Freedom of speech sometimes comes with consequences.

How about we do our part to change the tide? How about we do our best to switch off the destructive voices of the world in our personal spheres, and reflect the positive voice of God. He speaks power, holiness, peace, and love. He speaks victory, hope, and life. SInce the power of life and death is in the tongue, we must be vigilant and decide not to accept the wagging tongues of evil minded people. Rather, heed the Word of God and increase your capacity to hear and do all that He commands. Shema.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
