“Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God”; “and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord.” (Jeremiah 3:13, 12).
One of the most difficult things to say is, “I apologize.” It could be because we have a false sense of innate perfection that makes us reluctant to recognize the reality that we are sinners who need a Savior and that makes us feel too vulnerable. It could be that we’ve learned to convince ourselves that we have done nothing wrong, or that what we’ve done isn’t that bad.
Our Father in heaven is reasonable. He knows how we are. He knows we are faulty and unreliable, to say the least. This is why He manifested His love by giving Jesus as our Substitute. Jesus died the death we deserved so we can reap the reward for absolute faithfulness that He deserves. Through the Holy Spirit, He entreats those who have made mistakes (that’s all of us, in case you missed it).
This is where humility comes in. If we break the law of God, He simply wants us to do three things: experience godly sorrow for our sins; acknowledge/confess them; and turn, in heart, from them. There may be some people with whom we need to reconcile, which is an outgrowth of the three principles I mentioned. Otherwise, it’s just that simple. We don’t need to beat ourselves. We don’t need to put ourselves on probation until we feel holy again. We don’t need organize a pilgrimage to approach the shrine of [you fill-in the blank]. Simply follow the counsel from our theme text and know that God will keep His promise. Let me refresh your memory: “Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God”; “and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord.” (Jeremiah 3:13, 12).
Now, if you have some unsettled sin issues, do what God said, believe that you have mercy, and it shall be done unto you.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
