“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16).

God is the ultimate Relationship-Builder. But what should you expect? He’s the Creator of relationships.

Here’s the elephant in the room: you’ve done something offensive to a friend, neighbor, relative, employee, or fellow church member. You feel guilty now because you know better. The Spirit’s working on your conscience. What do you do about it? Based upon our theme text, I’ve got an idea: get that five ton beast off your chest before it suffocates you (and your relationship).

Sounds easy enough in concept, but I know it may be difficult in practice. Let me see if I can help you here. There are a couple of keys we must keep in mind. One key is that our confession to other human beings is related only to that which we have committed against them, nothing more. If you have a secret problem with sins like pride, overeating, inner rage, inappropriate sexual thoughts, or covetousness, your confession is to be directed solely to God. This should reduce your stress-level a bit. The sins you’ve committed against God are to be confessed to Him alone. That which has caused harm to others, must be clearly confessed to them (and God). If you have offended someone, it is your privilege to go to them and tell the matter plainly. These are your faults between you and them. If you have spoken harshly, ask for forgiveness. If you have been abusive, seek forgiveness and get help. If you have gossiped, backbitten, or committed adultery, seek forgiveness. Are you getting the point? Confess the things to certain persons whom have been harmed by your faults. It is then their privilege to forgive you as they hope their heavenly Father will forgive them.

The other key is that our sin pardoning Savior alone has the power we need to overcome our sinful tendencies toward evil. Whether sins committed against God only or those committed against His children too, He is able to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

So, by all means, go to those you’ve harmed, in faith knowing God is pleased when we seek reconciliation. Confess whatever you need to confess and be committed to praying for one another as God heals your strained or broken relationships until He comes.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
