This is devotional thought number 23 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:12).

So you want to be powerful, do you? If you do, you have to give up power. You have to diminish and divest. You have to humble yourself and yield. You have to do the opposite of what power grabbers do.

Let’s cut through the melodrama of my opener here and get down to brass tacks. There were so many people in Jesus’ day who hated Him. They were mostly power hungry religious leaders who were self-deceived into believing that Jesus was coming to dethrone them from perceived power; when really He was here to save them from their sins. It was a clear case of mistaken identity. They mistook Jesus for one of their kind. He was nothing like them. He was tender, compassionate, and 100% invested in their eternal well being.

The power cited in our theme text is synonymous with the word, “right.” Jesus gave the power, or right of spiritual inheritance to all who had transformational faith in Him. Those who embrace the Man and His message, received the rights only afforded Jesus Himself. To all who receive Jesus into our lives, He give the right to overcome all sin, and to become royal children of the heavenly King. Now, that’s real power! Like I said, you have to give up power to become truly powerful. You have to diminish and divest. You have to humble yourself and yield. You have to do the opposite of what power grabbers do, and then you will be successful.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
