This is devotional thought number 26 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.” (Ezekiel 33:15).
If you stole it, give it back! Don’t delay.
Today’s Bible counsel is simple, but very sobering. It may require soul searching and fasting. Certainly it will require a healthy dose of prayer. Stealing, overreaching in business, fraud, and related activities seem to have become the norm these days, but the One who sees in secret searches our hearts and brings awareness to our dishonesty. The blessing is that God’s intent for opening our eyes to our faults, even when they are unrelated to today’s particular context, is that we become more like Him. Only those who reflect the character image of Christ will inherit everlasting life. If you have read this far, you’re doing well. Keep going.
Jesus taught that we should have a childlike faith. What would that look like considering our topic for the day? Well, we often tell our children leave other people’s stuff alone, only take things that we have purchased from stores, and to give back toys they “accidentally” put in their pockets during play dates. It’s not a complicated concept. If it’s not yours, don’t take it. Taking other people's stuff is stealing. How are we doing so far? The point is, if children can be trained that honesty is of utmost importance, we can too. If we can train our children to return what they stole, and apologize, we should live that instruction by example. If it’s good enough counsel for children, it is even better counsel for us, to whom God has entrusted so much.
Here’s brass tacks for those to whom this applies: If you have stolen anything, confess and where it is possible (be honest about this), restore whatever you stole. If you have overreached in business dealings, cheated on your taxes, clocked hours with employers for work you did not do, dodged those pesky parking tickets, used company resources for personal use without permission, etc., ask God give you strength to do the right thing, and make amends. Remember the instructions you have given children in similar situations and do thou likewise. I will not lie to you, it will be difficult, and maybe even embarrassing, but it will be well worth your temporary discomfort. Depending upon how serious your situation is, you may require third-party assistance to face potential consequences, but do not allow fear of consequences hinder you from doing the right thing in God’s sight. He will strengthen you as you allow Him to perfect your character in the practical things in life.
So, if today’s emphasis applies to you, do not fret. Pray, prepare yourself, and move forward with courage. If you know someone to whom this applies, please share with them immediately, and lend your support.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
