This is devotional thought number 28 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51:1).

Does God really just “let bygones be bygones” or “sleeping dogs lie”? It depends…

There have been many times in my life I wish could just be erased. I don’t mean simple stuff like being teased when I was young, or the inexplicable fashion my parents chose for me. I am talking about much more serious stuff that, were I to tell you, in all the gory details, your perception of me might be severely lowered. I’m talking about sin in all its unflattering glory. I would want to get out my eraser or redaction technology, and blot out the things that would make me look bad were they discovered. The problem is that if I were to do this, it would not change the fact; neither would it make it impossible to unerase or unredact. Nothing really goes away. What is written, is what is written.

While God is no pushover, and He does not trifle with sin, He does keep His promises. He does enjoy pardoning our iniquities. He does really cleanse repentant sinners from all unrighteousness. He does really let bygones be bygones because of His tender mercies. The sleeping dogs will lie because Jesus removes every taint of our past sins when we choose to receive the blessed gift, by faith. Yes, there are earthly consequences for our actions, as we have said so many times before. However, those are the least of our worries, in the grand scheme. Those are temporary and light afflictions, which pass away when Jesus returns. He is kind enough to remove the eternal consequences that require separation from God. Jesus bridges the divide so we can be saved. Isn’t God good?

So, by all means, gather all of your sin debts and human inadequacies, carry them to God in prayer. Surrender them to Him, and enjoy the freedom forgiveness and cleansing brings. Live responsibly and help others do the same.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
