This is devotional thought number 30 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.” (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Many hymn writers penned songs that instill hope in a risen Savior. They point not only to the cross of Calvary, but also to Sunday morning. They portray an empty tomb where the grave clothes of the Master were neatly folded and left. They are melodious with the sweet music of thanksgiving that we no longer need to be in bondage to self, sin, or the devil. We can serve a Savior who has completely vanquished and triumphed over the tomb. Without this blessed reality, we would have no hope. There would be no need for churches, or even a judicial system. Whom would we worship in churches? What justice could be achieved in a courtroom? If Christ is still dead, our faith is all in vain.
Sin is a terrible disease that chokes the life out of everyone who succumbs to it. All who cherish and nurture favorite sins are controlled thereby, and there is no room for the Lord to be in control. With the hope given through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are able to live above sin. We are able to be under the complete control of God. There is hope in the resurrection—blessed hope.

One of the most striking things about Jesus being alive is the impact it has on His people. If we are His body and He is the head, then an important relationship is present. In the natural world, if the head is alive and well, there is a good chance that the body is at least alive. In the spiritual world, since the head, that is Christ is alive, the body too is alive. “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;” (Colossians 1:18, 21-23).

If you find that your religious experience and life are dead; if you find that self, sin, and the devil take turns mastering over you, ask the Lord Jesus, who is alive and well, to become your head. If He is the head in charge of every aspect of your life, you as His body will also flourish. The Lord is risen and is waiting to raise us all with Him.

I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
