This is devotional thought number 31 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

Living a Godly life is a privilege, and a pleasure. There is no other experience so uplifting, and so invigorating. No drug is more satisfying, and no wine more liberating than living in close communion with God through Jesus Christ. In Christ is fullness of joy, and treasures that cannot be quantified. These hidden treasures God would reveal to all, if we would simply cooperate and be patient.

The apostle Paul understood, perhaps more than any New Testament servant of God, what the Christian struggle was all about. He understood fully, the battle of the mind and flesh. “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:22-24). Paul also understood the temporary afflictions and privation that come to those who would venture to be faithful. “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:8-10).

One very valuable lesson for all who would live godly in Christ Jesus must learn is, we will endure trials. In fact, the promise of God is that we will face these hard times if we are faithful. Like Paul, it would be well having conquered the flesh by God’s grace, if we would embrace trials and affliction knowing that they must soon pass away. It is in the moments of our deepest struggles that God Himself is near. Let us not be consumed with the here and now, but look forward, with great anticipation. If we can see it with our eyes, it is only temporary. Trouble will not last always. If we see it only by faith, it is eternal. May the Lord teach us to focus on eternity by faith.

I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
