This is devotional thought number 39 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 22:16).
Sincerity on our journey with God is wonderful, as far as that goes, and yet there are times in each of our lives that we discover we have been sincerely misguided, deceived, or out of touch. That is not as much the problem as would be ignoring the enlightenment that comes so we can amend our ways. God loves us so much that He will not deny us the opportunity to learn new things about Him that may have been hidden in plain sight. He desires, above most things, that we all will come to a knowledge of the truth (His Son, the Scriptures, and the Ten Commandments Law).
Saul of Tarsus was sincerely wrong. He had all of his jots and tittles a perfectly arranged, rites and ceremonies well ordered, and methods well planned. The problem he had was that he thought he was giving God good service, but instead, as he would learn later, he was fighting against God. He took zealous pleasure in accusing, persecuting, and executing people of the Way (that’s what they called followers of Christ in those days). He would not have imagined how his havoc making ways were wounding His Savior. Jesus taught that the way we treat the least of His brothers and sisters, is really how we are treating Him. He identifies with His people.
As Love would have it (we don’t believe in luck), Jesus scheduled a visit to dear brother Saul. As Saul journeyed to Damascus to cause a raucous in the city, with the religious authority to exterminate Christians, Jesus arrested his entourage, got his attention, enlightened his mind, gave him a repentant heart, and provided a mission to lead as many people to the knowledge of the truth as possible. This well-orchestrated intersection in one man’s life has changed the face of the world forever. Brother Saul, whom most know as Paul, got baptized with water and the Holy Spirit. He learned to live according to all guidance the Holy Spirit provided concerning the teachings of Christ.
This is not just a history lesson about a guy named Saul. How is it with you? Have you been sincerely wrong about anything, and at this moment the Holy Spirit is bringing it to mind? Have you been misjudging the motives of someone with whom you associate on a regular basis? Have you been withholding love from someone you thought had it in for you? Have you been listening to friends and relatives tell you that the seventh-day Sabbath was done away with, along with God’s Holy Law? Have you been following preachers instead of principle? Today is your day. Now is the time to be sincerely on track, and continue your love journey with God; only this time, you can do it in full agreement with Him. Don’t delay.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
