This is devotional thought number 40 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Longsuffering or patience is a blessed virtue. All who are developing it are slowly, but steadily becoming like God. It is God who has demonstrated through His willingness to forgive, what true patience is. When He has reproved and corrected us repeatedly, yet we still do not get the message, God demonstrates patience. When He is still available to us when we finally decide to follow what He has commanded, we see clearly that He does not give up wooing us in frustration. God chooses rather to persevere, hoping to gain His objective--relationship with us.
Many are the ways that God has empowered us to demonstrate patience as He exemplified. Three of the ways are: patiently waiting for an answer to prayer; patiently leading others to Jesus; and patiently awaiting Jesus’ return to take His people home. As the woman, depicted in the Bible as pleading importunately to the unjust judge to hear her case, we are to press heaven with diligent prayer. We are to do this, not because God is unwilling to answer us, but to grow in our relationship with Him through consistent contact.
When we have opportunity to lead others to Jesus, we must not become discouraged if they do not act in ways that we would like. The Lord is responsible for their growth, and will be with them through the entire process. Oftentimes we become tempted to expect so much from those who are newly experiencing the Lord. Patience says, the Lord is in control, and He will lead them to His will.
The second coming of Jesus is much anticipated by God’s people. We wait anxiously, knowing that soon our struggles in this life will be over. The patience God gives enables us to continue to be faithful until the end, not allowing anyone to take our crown.
In all things, God imparts patience to His people. It is good to accept it.
