This is devotional thought number 41 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“I have refrained my feet from every evil way, That I might keep thy word.” (Psalm 119:101).

I am not usually into airing family laundry in social media, but I need to be honest with you; if you listen to some of us Christians, you might develop a defeatist mentality, spiritually speaking. When the sun is out, some of us focus on how hot it is. When we have cool, clear water in a tall glass, some of us focus on how little is left. When someone gives us a compliment about how wonderful we look today, we retort, “What happened to yesterday?” as if the compliment was an insult. I am so glad God is merciful and well able to give us all attitude adjustments if we cooperate with Him.

I love King David’s mindset in our theme text. Some people think about the king as an adulterer who consipred to murder a loyal man’s wife. God called him a man after (in pursuit of) God’s own heart. Some see him as a man whose sin caused the deaths of innocent people. God called him the standard of all good kings. Some see the king as the one who numbered the people against God’s will. God gave him a clean heart, a right spirit, and filled him with the Holy Ghost. He was the man who waited patiently for God to establish him as king, rather than usurp the authority King Saul. He was the one young man to be jealous over the name of Yahweh (Blessed be His Name) when the evil Goliath disrespected God and intimidated all of the strong men of Zion.

I said all of that to say that some believers read a passage like our theme text and would have people believe that we cannot actually do God’s will. Some would have us believe that David only meant that he refrained his feet from some evil ways - that he generally kept God’s Word when it was convenient. Aren’t you glad that we have stalwarts in the Bible record who change the narrative regarding righteousness, so when people bring up your past faults, you can let the past remain in your rearview? Abigail, Hannah, Ruth, Job, Joseph, Elizabeth, Mary, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah’s stories stand in the record to prove what God is able to do. Jesus is able to keep us from falling. He is able to strengthen us to put away all malice, anger, and unholiness, in this present age. He is able to save former murders, prideful spiritual posers, prostitutes, addicts, pimps, liars, false teachers, phony prophets, and anyone else willing to surrender our will to God. God is able to preserve all we give over into His care, until Jesus comes. I’m so happy pessimistic Christians were wrong about this all along, because God can help us too.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
