This is devotional thought number 42 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16).
The pursuit of power is one of the most intoxicating driving forces in our world today. Many pursue power by creating music that is popular and acceptable in our culture. Others pursue power by perfecting their abilities in sports. Still others pursue power by studying psychology in order to master the mind. Where can we find real power? Do we find it in books or on television? Can real power be acquired by exercising until the muscles have been perfectly sculpted? All of these things have an element of power inherent in them. Yet, they do not have the ability to change our lives from an eternal perspective.
The apostle Paul had a true concept of power. He said that the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth. The gospel of Jesus Christ has been changing lives for thousands of years. This gospel is God's demonstration of His love toward a lost world. When He created us, His intention was that we live with Him eternally. However, since the inception of sin, that plan seemed impossible to achieve. Since God knows everything, His plans include all eventualities into the equation. Sin was no surprise to Him. Before the world was, He had a plan that would go into effect immediately, should humankind sin. Jesus covenanted with the Father, that if humankind should sin, He would become our substitute. God's love did not allow Him to simply watch as sin destroyed the lives of the ones whom He loved. Just at the right time, Jesus became a man, and lived a perfect life in the flesh, died as a perfect substitute, and was raised from the dead, which bought our pardon. Now Jesus is in the heavenly sanctuary interceding in our behalf. Because of this, we have the power of God available to us to, one day, be restored to what God intended from the beginning.
Let the reality of God's love and all that He sacrificed in order to save us, permeate your thoughts today. Be encouraged. Believe the gospel. Now that is power.
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
