This is devotional thought number 43 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13).

Willpower. We all have it, to a greater or lesser degree. Some will themselves to lose weight. Some are determined to get that degree. Others are driven to finally write those books people have been encouraging them to write. Still others are committed to getting the professional help they need to kick the smoking habit that has plagued them for years. Willpower is admirable as far as it goes, but there are limits even to the strongest resolutions.

Nobody can really estimate the power of the will, and yet in order for us to change in character, we need power outside our own to make our determined efforts effective. Due to our congenital spiritual condition (that’s just a fancy way of saying we were born with a bent toward sinning), we naturally desire things that harm our characters. From our questionable choices of food, entertainment, friends, and hobbies, to our secret thoughts, we often miss the mark of holiness God has set for us. This is why we need Him to empower us, through the Holy Spirit, to do things that please Him.

If you were paying attention to the order in our theme text, you would have noted that God is the One who works so we can have the willpower to actually do what pleases Him. Do you see how that works? God moves upon our minds, desires, and abilities so we can do what pleases Him. God floods our lives with His vital energy so we can be determined to say yes to Him in all areas of our lives. Yes, we do have to make an effort. Yes, that effort to keep God’s Word will often be a battle and a march. Yet, we will never need to battle or march alone, if we simply keep our faith in Him. When we are tempted to do evil, we can surrender our will to God, and He will empower us to do His good pleasure. When bad memories plague our thoughts that threaten to derail our best efforts, we need simply to surrender those thoughts to God, replace them with the promises and other life-giving words from Scripture, and walk in the freedom of holiness.

Since God is kind enough to empower your weakened will, if you invest all your trust in Him, then give thanks for His offer, accept it, and invest all your trust in Him.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
