This is devotional thought number 44 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7).
I love how God uses nature to get His point across. We may not be able to understand complex and supernatural matters, but we can study and learn from many of the mysteries in nature. Sowing and reaping, while it is incredibly complex in its details, the basic outcomes are simple. When we sow the materials that are naturally encoded to produce certain crops, if we do all to prepare and cultivate said materials, the outcome will not be a surprise. If an apple, of a certain species is the resulting crop, there can be no mystery or mistake concerning what materials were cultivated to create this outcome. It’s simple! Mango natural materials do not, under any circumstances, produce callaloo plants. Callaloo natural materials do not, under any circumstances, produce fig trees or fruits. Figs natural materials do not, under any circumstances, produce star fruit or lychee crops. It is against nature. It is against the Creator’s design. The outcome is predictable.
Our theme text is a reminder of our opening thought, from a spiritual perspective. While many persons are self-deceived into believing that they can sow wicked, and/or blasphemous seed and somehow escape the naturally encoded outcome, there is no escaping the fact outside full and complete repentance. We cannot mistreat the disenfranchised and continue to prosper. We cannot break the law of God and have eternal life. We cannot disregard the laws of health and remain in good health. We cannot trample the overall principles of God’s Word and reap the rich rewards of the faithful. It’s simply not how it works. It’s not a matter of punitive action, as much as it is spiritual cause and effect being governed by God’s holy order. Whatsoever anyone sows, as a lifestyle, that person will reap. The following verses in a modern translation make both sides of the matter abundantly clear. We can sow for a blessed outcome, or we can sow for a detrimental outcome; it is our choice to make. “Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool. For a person will reap what he sows, because the person who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So we must not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.” (Galatians 6:7–10, NET).
