This is devotional thought number 45 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
It is difficult for people to believe that salvation is an absolutely free gift. Perhaps some of the disbelief is related to the fact that everything else in our world has strings attached. It is also possible that some do not understand how God can say that salvation is free, and yet He expects love and obedience.
The blessing of free salvation lies in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He lived as a man, died having become sin for us, rose on the first day of the week, and ascended to heaven to minister on our behalf; all to rescue us from eternal death, and to restore us to right relationship with God. It was the love of God that motivated Him to stay the execution of the human race, so to speak, in order to implement the process of the gospel work.
None of our good works make us worthy of eternal life, yet the Lord requires them. When we consider His requirements, it is a blessing to understand that everything He requires of us, He first supplies. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. He gives us repentance. He enables us to love Him by first loving us. Jesus was perfectly obedient to the law while living in the flesh, and He imparts credit for that obedience to those who receive it by faith. It is God that works in us, both to will and to do of His good pleasure. God freely gives these and other blessings. Only then does He require them of us in return.
Why is the Lord so willing to supply all that we need in order to be saved? Why did He not just allow the natural consequences of our sins to come to fruition? The simple answer is that His love motivated Him. The problem is that humans generally have such a poor grasp of godly love that it seems too simplistic. When the Lord begins to open our eyes to the extreme breadth of His love, we are more able to appreciate the gift of salvation. It is as we appreciate this gift that we choose not to explain it away, but embrace it.
I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
