“Honour the Lord with thy substance, And with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9–10).
Barnaby and How were spot on when they penned the words of a familiar hymn:
“We give Thee but Thine own
Whate'er the gift may be
All that we have is Thine alone
A trust O Lord from Thee.”
Every breath we breathe is God’s; He created and sustains us. Every moment we live is His; He allows us the privilege to exist upon this temporary platform called time. Every opportunity is given by Him. All that is and all that we are, in the creation of our being is attributable to YHWH. It is no wonder then, that the same God who gave Adam dominion in Eden continues to give his descendants stewardship of material gain. The Bible says, “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth...” (Deuteronomy 8:18).
More than a mandate to return a faithful 10% of our income and cheerful offering according to how God has blessed, is God’s counsel that all we have should be returned to God as a gesture of our trust that He will continue to provide all our needs. When He gives to us, we have two options: We can receive the material blessings and use most or all for whatever we deem fit, or we can return it all into His care for guidance on how to use it to be a blessing to His work and the lives of others.
The first fruits mentioned in our theme text are a microcosm of our dedication to God. In Eden God gave Adam an Eve everything besides the tree in the midst of the garden. In our work week, God has given us six days, but the seventh is holy. During the Old Testament system of sacrifices, God gave stewardship of all animals, but certain animals were to be returned to Him, depending upon the circumstance, for a sacrifice. Likewise in all areas of life, God gives dominion over all, but also tests our dedication by enjoining us to surrender our management of all to His guidance.
Thank God for entrusting so much to you; time, talent, influence, and energy. Ask Him how to use all to glorify Him and be a blessing to others. Trust Him to continue to provide for you in the process.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
