This is devotional thought number 54 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7).

I know it is difficult to believe, at times, that God has everything under control. With natural disasters that seem to be more supernatural than anything, economic woes, trials, tribulations, relationship problems, racism, etc., rather than thinking the world is out of His control, just know that soon He will put an end to all this suffering and confusion. He is always on time.

Can you believe Paul actually encourages us not to worry about anything? You read it right. There is nothing that happens in this life, as long as your life is surrendered to God, that should cause you to worry. I understand. There are more troubling things that happen to us than the list I cited a minute ago, but the Bible says we should worry about absolutely nothing. And this is coming from a man, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, who had his share of troubles.

What should we do instead of worry, then? When you are tempted to worry, choose rather to pray, pray some more, pray again, and then give thanks to God for hearing and answering your prayers. This is what the apostle said. It’s not that God is oblivious to your needs. He knows all and sees all. He wants you to invest the time in His presence, telling Him all that is on your mind. He, in turn, will secure your mind, through Christ Jesus, with a sense of peace that is beyond human understanding.

In closing let’s see what Peter had to say about this: “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:6–7). Those whose cares are all transferred from worry to trust in God can help others in need of God’s peace. Don’t worry. Pray. Don’t worry. Trust God. Don’t worry. He’s got it all under control.

I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
