This is devotional thought number 53 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, And crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.” (Isaiah 42:16).

I was blind once! When it happened, I could not believe it! In the morning, I could see, but by late afternoon, nothing - eyesight gone.

Many years ago I decided I was going to throw away my corrective lenses forever! As much as I loved my Jean Paul Gaultier gold frames, and the compliments they garnered, I would much rather have been able to see clearly than to have compliments. So, I went to the laser eye surgeon’s office, signed all sorts of strange documents that basically said that if the doctor blew up my head with the laser, it was my fault, and that my family would lose a lawsuit against him because I was holding him and his practice harmless in the case of some kind of medical mishap. Perfect!

OK, so I finished signing my life away, and the nurse gave me some medication that she said would help with the pain. WIthin five minutes, I was on cloud nine. As it turns out, this mystery pain medication was no pain medicine at all - it was valium. I suppose she gave it to me so I would not lose it while anticipating the surgery. That’s not my style anyway, but I guess she could not have known.

I was drugged up, covered up, and fully reclined in the theatre to get my eye surgery done. The surgeon explained everything and started the procedure. Before he could fire that high-powered laser at my corneal stroma, he made a micro incision around ¾ of my cornea, and then flipped it up like a pizza box top. Instantly, upon the surgeon flipping that layer up, I was blind! That was unexpected! But, after 27 seconds, he put my cornea back the way it was while fully irrigating the eye and smoothing it out like he was tinting windows and pressing out the bubbles. I opened my eyes, and I could see again; but this time I could see much better than before! Can you imagine how thankful I was?

Here’s the thing: When we are living outside of God’s will, we are living in darkness; we are blind needing God’s eye salve so we can see. And when we receive that new spiritual eyesight by faith, we rejoice! Why? Groping around in darkness is one of the most helpless feelings one can experience. When we surrender our will to God, He promises to never leave us, nor forsake us. We will continue to live in the light of Christ’s righteousness as long as we continue to walk in that light; so walk in the light and your life will never be the same.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
