This is devotional thought number 53 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

It’s not a morbid thought - that we are all going to die. We are here today, and sometimes gone today; tomorrow is not promised. It is a hopeful thought, given the right perspective, that we have just enough time to make a lasting impact on the world around us. In our families, we make an impact. In our faith and civic communities, we make an impact. In our various spheres of influence, no matter where we are, we make an impact. The question is: In the limited time we have to change the world, what kind of changes are we leaving behind. What will our legacy be? Will we be known for our love, undying dedication to the causes of the maligned, zeal for the kingdom? Or will we be known for our selfishness, foolish arrogance, and disregard for the common good?

In our theme passage, the wiseman gives us a royal charge to live like our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. When He encountered blind people, He gave them new vision. When He encountered hungry people, He gave them everlasting and temporal bread; in that order. When He encountered proud people, He gave them a glimpse of the mighty King of the universe. When He encountered injustice and all the despicable and repressive isms of society, He tightly wound and twisted cords together and whipped them out of the comfortable acceptance in the mindset of their perpetrators. Jesus made an indelible impact on everything and everyone He touched. He had only thirty-three and a half years to change the world forever, and that He did.

It is healthy to limit our vision to the moments we experience throughout every day we live, to say that we will do our best to make those moments count for something. And when we gather together all the fragments of lasting, positive impact, they will comprise a respectable legacy that can be passed on for generations to come. This life is but a fleeting moment, but our impact must continue long after we are gone.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
