This is devotional thought number 55 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2).

Affection is a strong word! What has your affection;cars, people, wealth, God, gossip, love, peace, or an attempt at a combination of all? God says that whatever has captivated your affection must be from the world above, not this one. Seriously.

In our theme passage, the phrase “set your affection on” literally means to “continually think of or continually give keen attention to.” I told you affection is a strong word. Check this scenario: What if you continually think of or continually give keen attention to your beautiful home in a gated community? What if you needed renovations done that cost more than $50,000? What if you came into some cash, found a highly recommended contractor with whom you shared your dreams for your home? And what if said contractor decided your hopes, dreams, and hard earned cash were of little importance and provided work that was so shoddy, that your beautiful retreat now floods, the additions are falling apart around you, and the contractor has no intention of making things right (real story)? Now what?

I gave just one real-life example of a brother who is having this problem right now. Fortunately, while he is extremely disappointed, and has no intention of taking this lying down, his “affection” is not set on his home in the posh, gated community. He has a miraculous grasp of the God who sees all, and has his best interest at heart. His faith is strong. He continues to exhibit a godly demeanor, serves the cause of Christ, and remains hopeful that God will settle the matter, in his favor.

Many times our affairs do not go as we would have hoped during these last and evil days, but if we seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, He will add peace, power, victory, and eternal life to our spiritual investment accounts. When our affections are set on things above, we can rest assured that these temporary and light afflictions will soon pass away, but the God who gives love, joy, and peace will soon return to give us our reward. When Jesus returns, He will give us new bodies to match the new, eternal experience we will have in heaven and the new earth when the time comes. When you continually think of or continually give keen attention to the things of God, the outcome will be worthy of God’s good name. Set your sights there and you cannot lose.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
