This is devotional thought number 59 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5–6).

Lies, lies, all lies! What could be getting me so excited today? The devil. The devil has a way of manipulating people into believing all sorts of things when we are sad and dejected. He is the chief opportunist. If, God forbid, someone’s mommy dies, he is there to create confusion and give misguided hope that she goes directly to heaven. If he is there to masterfully manipulate that person so they will sink into hopelessness, he will send a preacher to say mommy is burning in hell for some reason or another. If he is really in rare form, he marries the two lies and creates a holding place called purgatory from where she might be delivered, given the right circumstances. As I said a moment ago, and I need you to count them with me, “Lies, lies, all lies!” That’s three major lies. Our dead loved ones are not in heaven. Our dead loved ones are not burning in hell. Our dead loved ones are not in some intermediate space hoping for deliverance. If you were counting, you numbered three lies! What is the truth, then? I am so glad you asked.

You will note that in the creation story, we have a perfect formula for how human beings come into existence. It is a simple math problem. The Bible says, “Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7). The dust of the earth plus the breath of life equals a living being. The Bible reverses this simple math problem by stating that when we die: “...the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the life’s breath returns to God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7, NET). Simple. Body minus the breath of life equals a dead person who knows nothing, has no emotions, and does not participate in anything going on anywhere in the universe. Our dead loved ones await the resurrection. They remain asleep in their graves until either the first or second resurrections. This is good news, because now we don’t need to fret or be concerned and pronounce that they should rest in peace. There is no other way they will be able to rest. Nobody will be able to disturb them in the grave. They will not be writhing in pain from eternal flames of fire. They will not be forced to watch the degradation that continues on earth while they wing their way around heaven. No! They rest peacefully until the appropriate time. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27).

The question we all must answer honestly, is whether we are living in such a way that if we did meet our untimely demise today, if we will rest awaiting the resurrection unto life, or the resurrection of condemnation. We can choose today, that if we should die, whoever delivers the homily at our funeral can give thanks that we will be alive at the first resurrection, and receive the reward of the just.

By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
