This is devotional thought number 62 in our devotional series titled, “The Faith I Live By”
“The getting of treasures by a lying tongue Is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.” (Proverbs 21:6).
Sometimes we have our pet peeve sins that we have run up the flagpole as the pinnacle of all sinning. In some cultures, women speaking out, being seen, heard, or in authority is among the chiefest of sins. In some cultures sexual deviance is among the chiefest of sins. In other cultures dabbling in the supernatural is among the chiefest of sins. In still other cultures eating or, for some other reason killing animals is among the chiefest of sins. Whatever your thoughts in this regard, God has made Himself clear that a certain sin ranks really high on the sin richter scale— lying. He said, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: But they that deal truly are his delight.” (Proverbs 12:22). The devil’s lies is part of what got us into this sin mess in the first place. He lied to Eve regarding the consequences of disobeying God, she was deceived, and then she enticed Adam to sin. Do you see how quickly that spiralled out of control?
Now, mix the abomination of lying with the love of money, which is the root of all sorts of evil, and your problem has just turned all the way up! The Bible says, “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18). So if God gives us power to earn a living, and has given us exceeding great and precious promises in Deuteronomy 28, that He will bless us in every way imaginable if we are faithful, then it makes no sense at all to lie our way to the top of the financial food chain. We easily, in that case, turn rich blessings into dismal curses. Most modern translations of our theme text suggest that being deceitful to gain earthly treasure will cause both the treasure and the deceiver to vanish like a puff of smoke or a vapor. If the deceiver does not repent, he will be separated from God eternally. That soul will die.
What can we do to avoid this tragic end? Well, for starters, we can embrace the counsel that says: “...seek ... first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these [needful) things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33). “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; And there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: And he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” (Proverbs 11:24–25). “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; And that which he hath given will he pay him again.” (Proverbs 19:17). “Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency [from righteous labors] and with the firstfruits of all your income; So shall your storage places be filled with plenty, and your vats shall be overflowing with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9–10, AMP).
By God’s grace, this is the faith I live by, let this be the same for you, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (http://bit.ly/BQuotable)
