This is devotional thought number 71 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:6–8).

You can have confidence in God. Do you believe it? One of my friends once said, “We can accomplish either extreme in our own strength, but balance comes from God.” No truer words can be uttered regarding our relationship with God. Trusting self for righteousness will garner pride, pseudo accomplishments, and evaporating rewards. Abandonment of the pursuit of righteousness will garner pride, deteriorating ethics, invisible morals, and condemnation when justification matters most. We must flee all extremes and pursue God’s presence if we wish to have the balance that garners eternity with God.

Paul understood the futility of self-righteousness. He recognized the danger of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Therefore, Paul placed all his trust in God and accepted the victory that Christ offers to those who believe. He knew in whom he believed. He knew that his Redeemer lives to make intercession for him. He knew that God would finish the work of perfecting his character if he continued to trust in Him. Therefore, with confidence, he could look forward to the crown of righteousness God had prepared for him, and all those who also loved and anticipated Jesus’ appearing. Put all your trust in God, and your eternal future is assured. You can have confidence in God. Do you believe it?

I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
