This is devotional thought number 77 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.” (Hebrews 2:14–18).
God is not standoffish! God is not an elitist. Did that get your attention? How about this one? God gets His hands dirty so He can clean us up! Don’t take my last statement too far. God does not participate in temptation or sin. However, He does build bridges between heaven and earth. Jesus Christ is the greatest example of that. He who had never sinned, Jesus Christ, so identified with the plight of humanity, that He became sin for us so we could be redeemed and become the righteousness of God. It is a dirty job, but somebody had to do it, and Jesus was the only One who could.
In corporate settings, whenever there are massive problems that attract media attention, CEOs seldom roll up their sleeves and handle the problems themselves. Yes, you will see many make statements through their PR offices. The best of them may even read public statements to identify the problem(s) and pledge to rectify it/them. However, you may never see a CEO work like one of the company’s lower-pay grade employees to get the job done. It’s just not part of the CEO blueprint.
But God, the One who loves us immeasurably, gave us all of heaven in one Gift. He gave us the very essence of His Person, in Christ, to become a human being so we could become godly. Jesus Christ, the One who created the worlds, kingdoms, dominions, principalities, and powers, both seen and unseen, became like one of us so we could become like Him, holy and righteous in all things. God did not stay in His corner office on Main Street and hand down edicts for His peons to administer, to get us out of this cosmic PR disaster. No. He sent His best so He could be merciful and Jesus could be our faithful High Priest and have compassion on those who are buffeted by temptation. Jesus truly is, God with us. He is the answer to all our woes and difficulties.
I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
