This is devotional thought number 78 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:9–12).

Ye shall find rest unto your souls … if your rest is in the Lord. This sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Well, the children of Israel whom the Lord delivered from Egyptian bondage did not get the message. They struggled, worked, toiled, labored, and complained, but only two from the first generation of freed slaves learned to rest. What happened? They all trusted themselves, to a greater or lesser degree. Although they were the special people chosen by God to be a peculiar treasure, and in whose behalf He performed many wonderful works, they murmured, complained, and demonstrated disbelief in the One who loved them dearly. Consequently, of the first generation of freed Israelites, only Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised Land. Not even Moses and Aaron entered God’s special rest, because they disrespected the calling He had on their lives. I am sure Moses eventually repented, and hope Aaron did too, but the fact remains, the next generation went into the Promised Rest, and millions of Israelites died in the wilderness.

What does this have to do with us? Well, we are wandering in the wilderness called life. We are hoping to enter the eternal Promised Land, but we, too, must rest. We must lay down our own righteousnesses. We must lay down our sins and guilt. We must lay down our worries and griefs, surrendering all to God!
We must put our trust in the perfect work of Jesus Christ who lived a pure life, died as our Substitute, and rose again to minister on our behalf, cleansing us from all sin. If you believe this with all your heart, and surrender your will to God, you will … find rest unto your soul!

I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, are you?—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
