This is devotional thought number 81 in our devotional series titled, “The Gospel According to Paul.”

“And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.” (Hebrews 11:36-38).

The Bible is full of stories outlining the faith of God’s people. In every age, they demonstrated God’s ability to inspire faith. There were people like Abel who offered an acceptable sacrifice to God, and he lost his life at the hand of his brother because of it. Rahab was a former harlot who decided to hide some of God’s people in their time of need, without regard for her safety. David was a king after God’s own heart who understood repentance, to the point that the Bible refers to him only as righteous in spite of the deliberate sins of his past. On and on we could go highlighting these firm believers.

The Bible not only shows us the famous names of faith but the no-names of faith as well. There were those who were homeless, poor, tortured, and even sawn apart, and the Lord recognizes them as equally faithful. He does not measure things as we do. He does not look at the experience of Job as more important than the ones whose names He did not mention. The fact that Job’s story had a happy conclusion did not make it a more significant example of faith than those who died in obscurity for their faith.

It is a great blessing to note that the Lord is still able to keep us from falling and deliver us from evil. Today, as in the days of old, He is with us through our trials and temptations. His love and grace sustain us. If we are faithful until the end, He promises that we will receive a crown of life (Revelation 2:10).
